Mars Volta, ex-Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarists give away album
by JOE BOSSO
Former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante and Omar Rodríguez-López from The Mars Volta have teamed up for a new album, and here's the best part: they're giving it away.
Apparently, the 30-minute instrumental offering, titled simply Omar Rodríguez-López and John Frusciante, was recorded "many years ago," according to the duo, and while a few tracks such as 0 - yes, that's the name - have leaked out, most of the songs have been unreleased until now.
The album is part of a regular series of collaborations initiated by The Mars Volta guitarist and is available for download at his website.
It's totally free, but fans are encouraged to donate whatever they can to the Keep Music In Schools charity. The recording will also be made available for purchase on CD and vinyl later this year.
In related news, Frusciante, who left the Red Hot Chili Peppers last year, has a new band called Swahili Blonde. The lineup, so far, consists of Frusciante and percussionist Nicole Turley (of Weave). But Duran Duran's John Taylor is said to pop up, along with Alina Meyer and her father, Devo's Alan Meyer. You can hear a few tracks from the group's debut album, Man Meat, on their MySpace page.
Liam Gallagher working on film about latter-day Beatles
Liam Gallagher is reportedly developing a film about the final years of The Beatles.
The former Oasis frontman has not yet spoken to confirm his involvement in the project, but the Daily Mail reports that he has acquired the rights to The Beatles' so-called 'house hippy' Richard DiLello's memoirs.
Gallagher now looks set to officially announce a film project based on the book at next week's Cannes Film Festival in France. The singer is reported to be working on the project with Revolution Films, and is currently looking for a screenwriter and director for the project.
DiLello's book, called 'The Longest Cocktail Party: An Insider's Diary Of The Beatles, Their Million Dollar Apple Empire And Its Wild Rise And Fall', gives an insiders account of what it was like to work with The Beatles between 1967 and 1970.
Noel Gallagher has previously spoken about his love of the book, hailing it "fucking brilliant".
Now the drummer has told Billboard.com that the band's appearance at the festival has been pulled, with The Roots now set to act as backing band for a set with Wu Tang Clan's Ghostface, Method Man and Raekwon instead.
Taking place on June 5 at Penn's Landing in Philadelphia, the event will be headlined by Vampire Weekend and will also feature The Very Best, Neka and Das Racist.
