Squeeze leaders Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook might be moving toward a reunion. Difford left the group in 1999, and both men have refused all calls to re-form the band. But Difford, who was the group's main lyricist, recently told billboard.com that the chances are pretty good for Squeeze to work together again. He said, "I think it would be pretty amazing, really... We get offers all the time. We got an offer just today to support Crowded House on their American tour, which I think would be an amazing tour, but I'm not sure we're both in agreement about how we would do it."
Difford added, "Yes, I think it will happen at some stage, but I don't know if this time is the right time. We need to sit in a room and discuss it, and we've got to have concrete plans, and we have to get a booking agent... But it has to be emotionally, spiritually, and financially the right thing, and when all those planets come into line, then we will be there. At the time being, I can't see it on the horizon, but I've been wrong before."
That's quite a change from our last few interviews with Tilbrook, who was the lead singer and guitarist in Squeeze. Tilbrook has always said basically the same thing about whether he and Difford will join forces again as Squeeze: "Not working together has enabled us to appreciate each other for what we are. And not having the responsibility of going up each other's noses all the time has enabled us to get back our relationship, which was lost, really, when we started making records. I would rather have the relationship with Chris, and friendship, rather than the professional relationship -- that's more important to me. And we get on better now than we have done at, you know, any point since 1976, which is great."
That's not to say they haven't worked together in recent years. They sat down with author Jim Drury and recounted their history and music for the book Squeeze: Song By Song, and they co-wrote the song "Where I Can Be Your Friend" on Tilbrook's 2004 album Transatlantic Ping Pong. They were also together in the U.K. recently to help promote a new Squeeze greatest-hits album.
Difford kicks off a U.S. tour on Sunday (February 25th) in Nashville.
