The title of the first of 5-CD rock instrumental collections from Rhino Records might be a bit misleading. Because the ‘rock’ instrumental appeared in the rock & rolls period, that means the tracks in this album only cover the latter half of the 1950s. And in reality, none of the ‘orchestral’ hits (mostly in early 1950s) have made a cut in this series. If we consider that, this album really suits the bill. Since most of the key rock & rolls instrumentals are here, such as Sandy Nelson’s “Teen Beat”, the Champs’ “Tequila”, Dave ‘Baby’ Cortez’s “Happy Organ”, Duane Eddy’s “Rebel Rouser”, Link Wray’s “Rumble”, Santo & Johnny’s “Sleep Walk”, and Rock-A-Teens’ “Woo-Hoo”. |
