Here is another terrific series from the oldies specialist publisher, ACE Records. The producer claimed that this album collected hard-to-find songs that appeared on Billboard pop chart between 1956 and 1965.
In reality, this album comes up a little short for that claim. Although all of them are indeed hot100 hits but many of them aren’t that hard to find. Several songs are quite famous that you can find in many oldies collections, such as the Four Preps’ “26 Miles”, Billy Grammer’s “Gotta Travel On”, the Tempos’ “See You In September”, the Voxpoppers’ “Wishing For Your Love”, Johnny Mathis’ “It’s Not For Me To Say”, and Earl Grant’s “The End”. The rest of the selections are rare gems that seldom appear on compilations. But some one hit wonder songs here can be called so rare that you may not find elsewhere, including Rover Boys’ “Graduation Day”, the Techniques’ “Hey! Little Girl”, Dorsey Burnette’s “Tall Oak Tree”, Little Dippers’ “Forever”, and the Hightlights’ “City of Angels”.
Aside from some famous tracks, this is a good collection of great-but-often-overlook songs that rarely appear on any collection. It is another album that would satisfy the oldies listeners who want to dig a little deeper than casual hits. |
