The British punk rock musician Elvis Costello was a successful artist since the late 70s, and was said to be one of the most influencial songwriter since Bob Dylan. He has a long music career which could be divided into 2 separate periods; the period when he worked with his band, the Attractions, under Columbia record, and the latter years after he moved to Warner Bros.
There were several Elvis Costello collections out there in the market. Most of them concentrated on his years with Columbia, which was understandable, since that was the peak of his career when he landed several hit singles on UK chart. This 2007 collection from Hip-O Record collected the best of his Columbia years into one single disc. It is almost exactly the same as 1994's 'The Very Best of Elvis Costello and the Attractions', which also contained 22 tracks in the same chronicle order - with three tracks different from 2007 album. "Watch Your Step", "New Amsterdam", and "Love Field" were replaced with "New Lace Sleeves", "Almost Blue", and "(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes", which, some said, were better choices than the previous ones.
Any fans who want the career span collection should go to 2001 double disc 'The Very Best of Elvis Costello' or individual albums. And since 1994 album became harder to find, this 2007 album is the best introduction to the Costello's finest years available on the market today. |
