On September 26, 2006, Columbia released the box set album of legendary American band THE BYRDS. Unlike the 1990 box set, There Is a Season has added more significant songs, band's hit sons, and some demo like "Mr. Tambourine Man" single. With the total of 109 songs, beside their important, hits, and some great songs, the rest of the songs were filled with secondary and ordinary songs making this box set filling up with water, not meat.
Although THE BYRDS produced so many songs in their career, 2 CDs should be enough already to put most of their hit and important songs in. Comparing this box set with other BYRDS' box sets, greatest hits, and the best of, this box set is fairly good. Despite of so many of them were released (around 20 box sets, collections, greatest hits, and best of), many of them fail to put together the actual important songs (like many other greatest hits cds did). Only 3 albums stand out and are able to capture most band's significant songs;
The Best Of The Byrds, Greatest Hits, Vol.2 (1972)
The Byrds' Greatest Hits [Expanded] (1999)
The Essential Byrds [2 CDs] (2003)
The Essential Byrds [2 CDs] (European Edition) (2003)
The Best Of The Byrds, Greatest Hits, Vol.2 (1972): has a great collection of THE BYRDS' hits and important songs from the band's later years.
The Byrds' Greatest Hits [Expanded] (1999): has also a great collection of songs from their peak era. This collection based on 1967 The Byrds' Greatest Hits which has 11 greatest hit songs. This expanded edition contains the total of 14 songs.
The Essential Byrds [2 CDs] (2003): try to capture most great and important songs from the whole BYRDS' career. The album contains 33 good songs.
The Essential Byrds [2 CDs] (European Edition) (2003): should be considered the best greatest hits collections of THE BYRDS with the total songs of 44 songs. Sadly, this greatest hit edition did not sell in US. This collection adds a couple of BYRDS' essential songs including "The Bells of Rhymney" and "Dolphin's Smile".
