It is quite a challenge trying to pair the hip-hop producer with a legend soul singer, but that turns out to be a pretty good combination as shown in Al Green's latest release, Lay It Down.
It was co-produced by 2 of industry's prominent producers - the Roots' Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson and Grammy Award winning Jame Poyser. In his third album under the Blue Note records, Al Green also welcomed 3 younger R&B singers into this album. "Lay It Down" and "You've Got the Love I Need", dueted with Anthony Hamilton, were arranged with a funky sound. While "Take Your Time" with Corinne Bailey Rae and "Stay With Me (by the Sea)" with John Legend were made into classic soul ballad. The joined force of different generations gave this album the feeling of both classic soul and contemporary R&B all in one place. The rest of the album were '70s-style R&B songs that might eaily mistook for Green's materials during the '70s. This album proves that the soul superstar of the '70s still have the spirit of the classic soul within him - and a strong one too.
