depeche mode shared europa hymn video

Depeche Mode's Martin Gore announces solo album 'MG' and shares 'Europa Hymn' video - watch

Depeche Mode co-founder Martin Gore will release a solo album next month, now sharing a video for one of its tracks.

'MG' is the second lone full-length from Gore and follows on from 2003's 'Counterfeit²'. The 16-track instrumental LP will be released on April 27 via Mute. First, watch the video for 'Europa Hymn' below.

Johnny Marr recently unveiled a clip for his cover of Depeche Mode's 'I Feel You'. Watch it here.

Marr's version of the electronic rock band's 1993 single will be released as a seven-inch for Record Store Day 2015, which takes place on April 18. The single will also include a live version of The Smiths' 1984 B-side 'Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want'.

Speaking about the Depeche Mode cover, which is part of his live set, Marr commented: "I've surprised myself that it sounded so like me and my band. When you cover a song you have to bring something of yourself to it. I was playing it on tour, just in my dressing room, and it sounded good, and then I started to sing it and we worked it up in a soundcheck and played it immediately in the encore that night."

He continued: "The first night we played it someone posted it on YouTube and it became really popular in the encore. Then the tour was over and I was invited to do something for Record Store Day and it was a really good fit. The song turned out surprisingly well. We managed to put our own twist on it, and I think make it modern."

mavis staples will release new ep in april

Mavis Staples To Release EP In April

 by PAUL CASHMERE

The legendary Mavis Staples will release the four song EP ‘My Good Fortune’ in April.

“Aside from being one of the greatest singers ever, Mavis brings a positive energy unlike anything I’ve experienced,” Son Little said. “The thing I’ll remember forever about working with Mavis is her voice. Standing in the studio, holding her hand, I watched as each time she began a take. Everyone in the room jumped when we heard her voice. Chills. A metaphysical experience every time.”

The songs were produced by young new Anti Records soul musicians Son Little. Little also wrote two of the tracks ‘Your Good Fortune’ and ‘Fight’. ‘See That My Grave Is Kept Clean’ was recorded originally by The Staples Singers in 1962. ‘Wish I Had Answered’ was written by Mavis’ father Pops Staples in 1963.

“I’m always excited to do new songs,” Mavis says. “And this young man wrote two just for me. Seemed like we were a team made in heaven. He writes from his heart; he’s a great singer who sings from his heart, and he reached my heart. I’m so glad we got to work together. The whole experience right down to the finished product was just extraordinary.”

zayn malik quit one direction

Zayn Malik quits One Direction: 'now is the right time for me to leave the band'

Zayn Malik has quit One Direction, becoming the first member to leave the group.

Rumours about Malik's future in the band were abound after he recently pulled out of the group's Asian tour (March 19) so he could fly back to the UK to be with his family after pictures emerged of him with a mystery girl in Thailand. Malik is currently engaged to Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards.

A statement issued by the band confirming Malik's departure confirms that the group will continue without him. "After five incredible years Zayn Malik has decided to leave One Direction," the statement reads. "Niall, Harry, Liam and Louis will continue as a four-piece and look forward to the forthcoming concerts of their world tour and recording their fifth album, due to be released later this year."

Malik himself adds: "My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. I'd like to apologise to the fans if I've let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world."

Similarly, in a more personal message than the official statement, One Direction said: "We're really sad to see Zayn go, but we totally respect his decision and send him all our love for the future. The past five years have been beyond amazing, we've gone through so much together, so we will always be friends. The four of us will now continue. We're looking forward to recording the new album and seeing all the fans on the next stage of the world tour."

Malik's bandmate Liam Payne recently angered fans by covering up a photo of the exiled singer. Following Malik's departure, Payne was pictured on the band's tour in Asia holding up a poster of the band with fans. Payne later wrote on Twitter: "#makinglightofasituation sorry for the laughs guys".

Meanwhile, Zayn Malik's sister has asked fans to "pray for my brother".

john renbourn died at 70

British Folk Artist John Renbourn (1944 - 2015)

John Renbourn, who forged a half-century career in the British folk music scene along with being a founding member of Pentangle, died sometime in the last one to two days at his home in Hawick, England from an apparent heart attack. He was 70.

Renbourn was scheduled to play a show in Glasgow on Wednesday but didn't show up, alarming friends and colleagues. They contacted the police who found Renbourn's body at his home. Media sources are reporting his death on Thursday morning; however, with him not showing up for the Wednesday night concert, it is more likely that he passed away earlier in the week.

The venue The Ferry in Glasgow where Renbourn was scheduled to play broke the news of his death:

RIP John Renbourn. As his chosen Glasgow venue in recent years we are sad to announce the passing of our friend John Renbourn. All at The Ferry missed you last night, John!
Renbourn was born in Marylebone, London during the height of World War II. His father was killed in action so John was raised by his mother who was a pianist.

After his mother remarried, the family moved to Surrey and John attended a school in Guildford where, among his teaching, he developed an interest in American folk and blues.  By the beginning of the 60's, he was hitchhiking around England, France and Spain and made his first recordings and toured with Mac MacLeod. He also made early recordings with blues and gospel artist Dorris Henderson.

In 1965, Renbourn became friends with Bert Jansch and the two developed an innovative style of playing called Folk Baroque. That same year, John released his first solo album, John Renbourn, that included a number of songs he wrote along with traditional tracks, a Muddy Waters song and two written with Jansch.

By 1967, Renbourn and Jansch had joined forces with Jacqui McShee, Danny Thompson and Terry Cox to form Pentangle. McShee was also a folk singer while Thompson and Cox' background came from jazz and as members of Alexis Korner's band, giving the new group an eclectic basis in a variety of genres. The five member's reputations helped the new band who had their first public concert, a sell-out, at Royal Albert Hall.

The next year, Pentangle put out their first album, The Pentangle, on Transatlantic, reaching number 21 on the British Albums chart. After a double LP of both studio and concert recordings (Sweet Child), the returned to the charts with their biggest success, Basket of Light (1969 / #5 Britain).

Pentangle released a total of five studio albums before, on January 1, 1973, Jansch decided to quit the band leading to their breaking up.

Even during his time with Pentangle, Renbourn continued to record solo albums. Throughout his career, John recorded almost twenty solo albums, two with the John Renbourn Group, one with John Renbourn's Ship of Fools, five with Pentangle, three with Stefan Grossman, two with Dorris Henderson and one with Jansch.

Outside of performing, Renbourn took a job as a faculty member at Dartington College of the Arts in 1986 where he introduced the first degree in steel-guitar playing.

jorgen ingmann died at 89

Guitarist Jorgen Ingmann (1925 - 2015)

Danish guitarist Jorgen Ingmann, who had brief international fame with the instrumental hit Apache, died on Saturday at the age of 89. According to his daughter, he passed away suddenly while working at his computer.

Ingmann was born in Copenhagen and started his career playing with jazz violinist Svend Asmussen in the group Swe-Danes.

As a guitarist, he followed in the footsteps of the great Les Paul, even setting up his own studio where he experimented with similar technology including multi-tracking and distortion. His early, home made, recordings included multiple instances of Ingmann on guitar along with his own accompaniment on bass and drums.

Jorgen started releasing music under the name Jorgen Ingmann and His Guitars and, in 1961, recorded a version of the song Apache, originally done by The Shadows and written by group member Jerry Lordan. The record went to number 2 on the U.S. Hot 100 and 9 on the R&B chart.

Ingmann followed later in the year with Anna, which only made it to 54 on the Hot 100. It was his last American hit but he remained popular for a number of years in Europe, especially in Germany where he had a series of top twenty hits.

Jorgen also recorded in a duo with his wife, singer Grethe Ingmann. The pair won the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix in 1963 with the song Dansevise (Dance Ballad) and took the song to the prize in that year's Eurovision Song Contest. The couple, married in 1956, divorced in 1975.

Ingmann retired from music in 1980.
