queen start australian tour

Queen Kick Off Australian Tour In Perth

 by PAUL CASHMERE

Queen have played their first show in Australia in 30 years in Perth with Adam Lambert on lead vocals.

While an American Idol seems a strange choice as frontman, think about the flamboyant pop star who originally fronted the rock band.

Mercury was a pop star, Queen were a rock band. When Queen placed Bad Company/Free singer Paul Rodgers in as frontman they failed miserably. Rock upon Rock is not how the Queen formula works.

Lambert is pure, outrageous pop. He is the perfect replacement for Freddie Mercury. He can recreate the sentiment without fiddling with the formula. Lambert makes Queen live possible and still relevant where Rodgers kept them musically credible but dated.

morrissey's album removed from itunes and spotify

Morrissey's World Peace Is None Of Your Business removed from iTunes and Spotify

Morrissey's latest album, World Peace Is None Of Your Business, has been removed from US iTunes and Spotify.

The album has also been taken down from streaming site Rdio as well as the Stateside Amazon store as a digital purchase, reports Slicing Up Eyeballs, who add that it is currently not known if the move was at the behest of Morrissey or Harvest, the label on which the record was released. A UK representative for Morrissey refused to comment on the removal of the album in the US. At the time of writing, the album is still available to buy on UK iTunes and is streaming on UK Spotify.

Earlier this week (August 17), the singer claimed he had proof that he had been dropped by the label, after Harvest denied claims that their relationship had ended following the release of the album.

In a new statement posted on Morrissey fansite True To You on August 20, the singer detailed his disappointment with Harvest's marketing decisions, accusing them of not spending money to release proper music videos. Morrissey adds that Harvest "botched" the release of 'World Peace Is None Of Your Business'. Read the full statement here.

"I believed that the rich soil of the album had several strong hit singles," he wrote. "Frayed tempers began when Harvest arranged the ’spoken word’ films, none of which gave any clue as to what World peace is none of your business [sic] intended to be, or is. The films were OK, but they went nowhere and stayed there.? With every nerve alert, we pushed the label for a proper video for Istanbul to precede the album, not least of all because a single ahead of the album release might inch the album to a higher chart position."

phil collins to play first concert in four years

Phil Collins Sets His First Concert in Four Years

It has been four years since the last time Phil Collins took the stage for a full concert and even longer since he played a standard set with his hits.

Collins last toured in 2010 but it was in support of his Motown covers album Going Back. Other than an occasional appearance, his last full fledged tour spanning his catalog was in 2005 with the Finally, the First Farewell Tour. Then, in May, he performed two songs (In the Air Tonight and Land of Confusion) at the Miami Country Day School where his son attends as part of a benefit.

Once again, Collins will be performing for a benefit on December 6 but, this time, it will be for more than two songs. The occasion is the Dreaming on the Beach Concert for the Little Dreams Foundation, a charity that he and his wife Orianne founded in 2000 to help make the dreams of young talent come true.

Joining Collins for the evening will be Laura Pausini, Alejandra Guzman and additional guests. The event will be held at the Fillmore Theater in Miami Beach.

bob dylan to release new basement tapes

Bob Dylan Sets The New Basement Tapes Release Date

 by PAUL CASHMERE

Bob Dylan’s reinvented New Basement Tapes will be released in November.

When Dylan recorded The Basement Tapes many songs written at the time were left unrecorded. Producer T. Bone Burnett has gathered a collection of Dylan’s famous fans and friends to put the music to the lyrics that had previously been left unfinished.

Elvis Costello, Rhiannon Giddens (Carolina Chocolate Drops), Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), Jim James (My Morning Jacket), and Marcus Mumford (Mumford & Sons) are some of the name who contributed to the new album.

47 years after the recording of the original The Basement Tapes, the unfinished songs have been completed.

T Bone Burnett explains the project:

Last autumn, I received a message from Bob Dylan’s publisher telling me that a box of lyrics had been found, all hand-written by Bob in 1967, during the time of the original Basement Tapes recordings. The question to me was, “Would you like to do something with these?” Shocked, I asked if Bob was into this, and having been told he was, I asked no more questions, but rather set out to come up with something that would do justice to Bob and be true to the spirit in which the lyrics were originally written. Bob had been collaborating with an extraordinarily talented group of musicians at the time, any of whom could have led their own bands. So, the first step was to find a group of song writers/band leaders who would be able to work together to write, sing, and perform melodies for these soulful and playful lyrics.

The artists we invited – Elvis Costello, Rhiannon Giddens, Taylor Goldsmith, Jim James and Marcus Mumford – were equal to the task. Not only do they have the talent and the same open and collaborative spirit needed for this to be good, they are all music archaeologists. They all know how to dig without breaking the thing they are digging. We sent sixteen lyrics to each artist ahead of time, and they all showed up at Capitol Studios in the basement of the Capitol Records building in Hollywood in March of this year. Some had written a melody or two, others had written a dozen, but a couple of days before the sessions started, an additional eight lyrics from that same period showed up. Those lyrics, which no one had time to think about, led to some of the freest recordings.

The first day, we recorded one song – the killer “Down On The Bottom,” led by Jim James and supported mightily by the others. At the end of that day, we started looking at the number of songs we had in front of us – there were going to be multiple versions of many of the songs – and we didn’t want to turn this into any sort of competition, so we decided to record everything.

What transpired during those two weeks was amazing for all of us. There was a deep well of generosity and support in the studio at all times, which reflected the tremendous trust and generosity shown by Bob in sharing these lyrics with us in the first place. More than 40 recordings were created, the first 20 of which will be released this fall on Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes. Sam Jones captured all of it on film, and we’re creating a documentary that will give audiences an inside look at the making of this album and explore the historical context of Bob’s original Basement Tapes recordings and their enduring influence. We are all looking forward to sharing this project with you.

ides of march 50th anniversary show

The Ides of March Ready 50th Anniversary Celebration Box Set, Special Show

The Ides of March will officially be fifty years old on October 16 and they are celebrating with a new box set and a special anniversary show.

The band formed on October 16, 1964 as The Shon-Dels and released their first record, Like It or Lump It, the next year. By 1966, they were officially The Ides of March and had a local Chicago top ten hit with You Wouldn't Listen but it wasn't until 1970 that they broke big nationally with the number 2 hit Vehicle.

Two years later, the band broke up. Jim Peterik, who was one of the original members, went on to form Survivor and have hits with songs like Eye of the Tiger and The Search is Over.

The Ides of March, including Peterik, reformed in 1990 and have been together ever since, one of the lengthier success stories of the rock era.

The band is currently working on a new CD/DVD box set to commemorate fifty years together. Last Band Standing will include tracks from throughout their career and a few new songs along with special videos, live concert tapes and special guests. Look for it this fall.

Then, on Saturday, September 27, the band will have an anniversary blowout at the College of Dupage with a concert that will include special Chicago band guests such as Tom Doody (The Cryin' Shames), Carl Giamarese (The Buckinghams), Jimy Sohns (The Shadows of Knight) and Ronnie Rice (The New Colony Six). The evening will be hosted by Dick Biondi and Bob Sirott.

If all of that wasn't enough, Jim Peterik recently released his biography, Through the Eye of the Tiger: Rock 'N' Roll Life of Survivor's Founding Member and keyboard player Scott May put out his first solo album, Outside the Inside.
