pixies reveal new songs

Pixies announce four new tracks on 'EP-2' and new video "Blue-Eyed Hexe" - Watch

Following the successes of the track 'Bagboy' and the four-track 'EP-1,' Pixies deliver again, rolling out 'EP-2,' four more brand new songs - 'Blue-Eyed Hexe,' 'Magdalena,' 'Greens and Blues' and 'Snakes,' as well as a music video for 'Blue-Eyed Hexe.'

The new songs were recorded during October 2012 at Rockfield Studios in Wales, UK, were produced by Gil Norton, and written by the Pixies. The 'Blue-Eyed Hexe' music video can be viewed below.

Pixies will continue their extensive world tour in 2014, kicking off on January 15 with a 33-city North American trek, followed by a series of major South American and European festivals in the Spring and Summer. The festival appearances will include headline slots at Lollapalooza Chile, Lollapalooza Argentina, and Lollapalooza Brazil in April, as well as at London's 'Field Day' in early June. All dates are below.

Pixies talk about the four new songs on 'EP-2'

'Blue-Eyed Hexe'
About this track, Pixies' Black Francis explained, 'It's a tale from the northwestern part of the UK, and it's a witch-woman kind of a song. That's what a 'hexe' is, and ours is a blue-eyed hexe.' Guitarist Joey Santiago added, 'Gil wanted a swagger, he wanted the guitar solo to sound like you're going to have sex with this blue-eyed hexe.'

'Magdalena'
'This song is so atmospheric,' remembered Santiago. 'We had these weird Moog pedals that sounded like water. It was a very mood-based, atmospheric sound, not based on any lyrics or anything.' Added drummer David Lovering, 'One of my favorites, maybe tied with 'Indie Cindy.' It's cool the way it flows, and it's a very simplistic song, very pretty, cool and moving.'

'Greens and Blues'
Said Black Francis, 'As with all my songs, I would prefer people add their own interpretation to it. But, in this case, let's just say that we had done 'Gigantic' as the closer for many years at our reunion shows and it worked really well. But I could see that we were going to grow weary of that and I felt like we basically needed a better 'Gigantic.' It was my attempt to come up with another song that would ' musically, emotionally and psychologically ' sit in the same place that 'Gigantic' has sat. Not that I could ever replace that song: you write songs and they come out the way they come out. So perhaps it can be said that this song fills the emotional niche that 'Gigantic' occupied, another show-closer. I think the lyric alludes to that, the fact that it's the end of the night, the end of something. And a separation if you will, between the band and the audience. So I guess it's kind of a goodbye song, or really more of a 'good night' song.

'Snakes'
'I'm not a jammer,' said Santiago, 'but Black Francis and I started jamming it out. I had this little idea and I did that sliding guitar just to emulate a snake.' Black Francis adds, 'This one was totally written in the studio session. It proved to be a little bit difficult to play and a little bit difficult to record, sonically, but we stuck with it and I like the result.'

meat loaf is back in action

Meat Loaf Is Back Like A Bat Out Of Hell

 by PAUL CASHMERE

Meat Loaf is returning to action less than 12 months after hanging up his bat.

Meat Loaf will head to Las Vegas in February for a 24-date residency at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino for Rocktellz & Cocktails.

In May, 2013, Meat Loaf announced he would no longer tour due to the “nightly stress” but a stable location such as Vegas allows him to continue to perform.

The Rocktellz & Cocktails format is the full-on rock concert mixed with stories from the artists, much like the VH1/MTV Unplugged shows.

“I had so much fun doing the show in the fall, I couldn’t wait to extend my time in Vegas when they asked me to,” said Meat Loaf. “For me, the show is more than just another concert because the RockTellz & CockTails format allows me to add something different. I’m able to bring together music, acting and theater and do things you can’t normally do when you’re on the road. I get to have a lot of fun and it definitely shows.”

RockTellz & Cocktails is another Vegas production from Adam Steck, the man behind Las Vegas productions for Human Nature, The Australian Bee Gees Show and Thunder From Down Under.

“As a life-long lover of music, I’m particularly excited to bring RockTellz & CockTails to the Las Vegas Strip,” said Steck, founder and CEO of SPI Entertainment. “This show is about celebrating the spectacle of the artist and their musical evolution, while providing an arena-worthy performance in an intimate, interactive setting. I’m passionate about bringing fresh and exciting entertainment offerings to Las Vegas and RockTellz & CockTails will be a musical journey unlike any other.”

Meat Loaf will perform at Planet Hollywood, Las Vegas from February 13 to April 8, 2014.

create gigantic hotel california records

The Eagles' 'Hotel California' LP made into gigantic vinyl record

The Eagles 1977 album 'Hotel California' has been made into a gigantic vinyl record.

The record has been made to celebrate the reopening of Los Angeles venue The Forum and The Eagles' six show residency there, which is taking place later this month. The massive LP has a diameter of 407 feet and covers 5.7 acres.

The vinyl record spins at 17 miles per hour, but, reports Rolling Stone, does not actually play music. It took 75 people to make the record and it can be seen from over a mile high, featuring lettering as tall as the 'Hollywood' sign in the Hollywood Hills. Click above to watch a video about the record's construction.

The Forum, in the Inglewood suburb of LA, has undergone a $100 million makeover after being purchased by The Madison Square Garden Company - who own New York's iconic Madison Square Garden - in 2012. Over the years the venue has seen performances from the likes of Elvis, Led Zeppelin, Kiss, Queen, Fleetwood Mac, Guns N'Roses, Nirvana and Iron Maiden.

jay traynor died at 70

Passings: Jay Traynor of the Mystics and Jay and the Americans (1943 - 2014)

John "Jay" Traynor, who sang with the Mystics and was the original Jay of Jay and the Americans, died on Thursday after a two year battle with liver cancer. He was 70.

Jay Siegel of Jay Siegel's Tokens, the last group with which Traynor worked, wrote on Twitter:

It's with great sadness to tell you that Jay Traynor passed away this morning. He's been fighting liver cancer for the past 2 years. We all lost a great talent & a true gentleman, & I lost a wonderful friend. -Jay Siegel
Traynor was born in Brooklyn, NY on March 30, 1943 and started his first group, the Ab-tones, while in his mid-teens.  At the age of 17, Jay was asked to become the new lead singer of The Mystics who had previously had a major hit with Hushabye.  He was the third lead for the group and, by the time of his joining in 1960, the heyday of the harmony vocal groups was coming to a close. Traynor recorded three tracks with the group, White Cliffs of Dover, which became a single though not successful, Blue Star (the flip of Dover) and Over the Rainbow which wasn't released to the public until the 1980's.

Unhappy with being the "replacement" guy in the Mystics, Traynor hooked up with Howard Kane, Kenny Vance and Sandy Deanne, the last two of which had been in the semi-successful group The Harborlites who had a moderate New York area hit with Is That Too Much to Ask. The newly formed Jay and the Americans were brought to Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller who molded the group's sound, using the group's doo-wop harmonies with Traynor's more pop voice over the top.

Their first single, Tonight from West Side Story, became a local New York hit but was outsold nationally by the instrumental version by Ferrante and Teicher.

Their second single was the song Dawning backed with She Cried. The record didn't do well until six months after its release when a West Coast DJ turned the record over and started playing She Cried over and over. The song went to number 5 on the national charts.

Jay and the Americans went out on a long national tour in support of the single and the album of the same name, which took a toll on Traynor's psyche.  After missing a few rehearsals, the other members of the group asked if he wanted to go solo and didn't stand in his way when he said he had thought about it.

Traynor released a couple of albums during the 60's that were not successful and, in the latter part of the decade, went to work at Woodstock Ventures.  In the 70's, he worked behind the scenes with groups like Mountain, Yes, Ten Years After and the Who before settling down in Albany, NY and becoming a camera operator at WNYT television.

Later in his career, Traynor performed with cover bands and eventually became lead singer of the Joey Thomas Big Band where he developed an act featuring Frank Sinatra music. In 2006, he joined his final group, Jay Siegel's Tokens.

phil everly died at 74

Passings: Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers (1939 - 2014)

Phil Everly, one half of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame brother duo the Everly Brothers, died on Friday from complications of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder) at the age of 74.

Phil's wife Patti told the L.A. Times that the disease was due to a lifetime of smoking. "We are absolutely heartbroken. He fought long and hard."

Phil and his brother Don, just under two years older, were born into a musical family. Their father, Ike, was a musician and he and his wife, Margaret, and their two sons had a radio show on KMA and KFNF in Shenandoah, IA in the 40's along with touring as the Everly Family.

After moving to Knoxville, TN, the now high school age brothers caught the ear of Chet Atkins who arranged for them to sign with Columbia in 1956. Their one and only single for the label, Keep A' Lovin' Me, did nothing and the brothers found themselves again without a contract.

Atkins next brought them to Acuff-Rose publishing where they signed as songwriters with the promise that they would also get a recording contract. That promise was fulfilled in 1957 when they signed with Cadence Records and they immediately went into the studio to record Felice and Boudleaux Bryant's Bye Bye Love. The song went to number 2 on the Pop and 1 on the Country charts and started the Everly's on a long association with the songwriting duo.

Over the next two years, the Everly's would score five additional top ten hits, two of which hit number 1, with songs by one or both of the Bryant brothers (Wake Up Little Susie, All I Have to Do is Dream, Bird Dog, Devoted to You and Problems).

Their hit run was followed by almost a year when none of their singles made the top 15, so the brothers began recording songs that they had written ((Till) I Kissed You, Cathy's Clown, When Will I Be Loved) and were written by others (Let It Be Me) to extend their hit making days. They also left Cadence for Warner Brothers in 1960 and, for a time, both labels were releasing Everly singles.

Shortly after signing with Warner, the Everly's got into a disagreement with Wesley Rose of Acuff-Rose and were no longer able to record songs from their roster of writers including the Bryants and, ironically, themselves. Their songs, old and any new, were still controlled by the company, so the Everlys started to record music by writers outside of the Acuff-Rose stable including Walk Right Back (Sonny Curtis), Ebony Eyes (John D. Loudermilk) and Crying in the Rain (Howard Greenfield and Carole King).

Rain's followup, That's Old Fashioned, became the last top ten hit for the Everlys and the fall was fast and hard. They only reached the top 40 one more time in their career with 1967's Bowling Green, which peaked just at 40. They also tried their hand at running their own record company, Calliope Records, and Phil put together a short lived side project, the Keestone Family Singers, with Glen Campbell and Carole King that only recorded one unsuccessful single.

By the mid-60's, the brothers had settled their difference with their former publishers and were once again able to record their own songs, but by that time they both had addiction problems and, at one time during a European tour, Don had to leave for hospitalization leaving Phil to sing with the band's bass player.

Throughout their career, Don and Phil were known for the quality of their albums from 1958's Songs Our Daddy Taught Us, which was filled with traditional folk and country songs, to 1968's Roots, which critics considered an early example of country rock. Unfortunately, the two brothers began to have regular disagreements and, in 1973, they split, reportedly not speaking for almost a decade.

Phil became an active solo artist and songwriter that peaked in 1983 with the album Phil Everly which included the duet with Cliff Richard She Means Nothing to Me, a single that peaked in the U.K. top ten.

On September 23, 1983, Don and Phil reunited for the first time in a decade at Royal Albert Hall in London for a show that was recorded and released as a double live album. While their relationship remained rocky, they did work together fairly regularly over the remaining years, including three albums, EB 84 (1984), Born Yesterday (1986) and Some Hearts (1988).  Phil also remained active recording on his own and in duets with others including Vince Gill on his album These Days.

The Everly Brothers were one of ten artists that were in the very first class for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.

Everly is survived by his wife, his mother, two sons, two grandaughters and his brother, Don.
